In Memoriam: Heinz G. Floss

By Taifo Mahmud, PhD and Bradley Moore, PhD On December 19, 2022, Heinz G. Floss, a world-renowned natural product chemist and a former president of the American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP) and ASP Fellow, died at his home in Bellevue, Washington following a fall. He was 88 years old. Floss was a highly regarded mentor, proponent of natural product research, valued member of the ASP, and, to many of us lucky enough to work and study with him, he was an inspiration and a dear friend. Floss was born on August 28, 1934 in Berlin, Germany. He grew up in a city ravaged by the Second World War and experienced the misery of the postwar era. He completed his Diplomarbeit (master’s thesis) (1958) in chemistry at the Technical University of Berlin and his PhD (1961) at the Technical University of Munich, both under the guidance of Prof. Friedrich Weygand. Weygand was a student of Richard Kuhn (Nobel Prize 1938), who was a student of Richard Willstätter (Nobel Prize 1915), who himself was a student of Adolf von Baeyer (Nobel Prize 1905). Baeyer was a student of August Kekulé, the principal founder of the theory of chemical structure and the Kekulé […] Read More

Behind the Scenes in Pharmacognosy: Smoke Taint in American West Coast Wines

As wildfires become more commonplace across the globe, one question is how the secondary metabolites produced as a by-product of the fires alters taste profiles or sensory perception of foods and beverages. Phil Crews and Paul Dorenbach were recently interviewed following their recent article on wildfire taint of wines, how it can impact the wine industry, and what is the chemistry behind wine taint.

Pharmacognosy Dispatches from the Ukrainian Frontline

Dominik Popowski is an ASP member and a graduate student in the Department of Pharmacognosy and Molecular Basis of Phytotherapy, Medical University of Warsaw. Popowski put us in touch with Professor Oleh Koshovyi from the Department of Pharmacognosy at the National University of Pharmacy, Kharkiv, Ukraine, and we received Koshovyi’s detailed comments on March 21. Their personal accounts of the war are stark reminders of the deep impact of international conflicts. Gordon Cragg and Edward Kennelly edited the articles for clarity and content.

Successful ASP Summer Research Fellowship Program Continues in 2022

Ama Boamah’s first time out in the field in the Great Salt Lake in Utah collecting samples for microbial isolations

A highly successful Summer Research Fellowship (SRF) program was launched in 2021 and will be offered again in 2022 with a March 15 deadline. This innovative ASP-sponsored program offers a 2.5-month stipend to enable students to engage in research experiences under a mentor in the natural product sciences.

Behind the Scenes in Pharmacognosy: Antibacterial Peptides from Ghost Pepper

Ghost Peppers Hicks Lab

Erin Conley interviews Dr. Leslie Hicks and PhD candidate Kevin Culver (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) about their work on ghost peppers and potential antimicrobial peptides. The ghost pepper, one of the hottest ever grown, produced two novel antimicrobial peptides which were characterized by the lab. Erin also dives into the lab’s culture, working outside of academia, and the lab mascot.

HOT TOPICS IN PHARMACOGNOSY: Revisions of “Repurposing for CoV-2” and Potential Uses of Cationic Peptide Compounds as Antibiotics and Other Diseases

In the February 2021 ASP Newsletter I commented on and gave “potted precises” of the work done on large scale repurposing of known drugs in order to try to “short-circuit” the time required to test, and hopefully bring to market, a number of potential candidates as drugs, ideally delivered orally.…However, in a very recent article in Science both sets of authors in a joint paper demonstrated that a significant proportion of the compounds identified, including a number of those “pushed by various political figures” in the early stages of the “pandemic,” were artifacts in terms of being antiviral agents and/or leads thereto.

Inaugural ASP Vanguards Virtual Symposium Series a Great Success!

ASP Vanguards - Cindy Graf

As we collectively surpass a year and a half together in the global COVID-19 pandemic, many of us suffer from online meeting fatigue and sore monitor eyes. The ASP overcame these challenges this summer and hosted a virtual conference series on July 16, 23, and 30 entitled “Vanguards of Natural Product Research 2021,” leveraging the Virtual Chair platform as a venue to increase engagement and personal connection. The program was very successful in building and maintaining meaningful connections and providing important opportunities to younger members of our society at a crucial moment in their careers.

ASP President McPhail Addresses Members

I am profoundly moved and honored to have this opportunity to serve the ASP as president. The ASP has been an anchor like no other for me since shortly after I arrived in the United States from Zimbabwe, twenty-one years ago now. The stated mission of the American Society of Pharmacognosy is “to promote and develop the science of pharmacognosy and all aspects of those sciences related to natural products.”
