ASP Minority Membership Initiative

Free Membership in the American Society of Pharmacognosy

for All Students, Faculty and Alumni of All Majority Minority Serving Institutions

In an effort to be pro-active in increasing participation in the STEM fields by researchers who are Black, Indigenous, and Latinx (BIL), while also reducing the cost of participation, the American Society of Pharmacognosy has initiated a program to recruit aspiring natural product researchers to join our scientific society.

Starting immediately the American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP) is offering free Associate Membership in the ASP to all students, faculty and alumni of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions of Higher Learning and all Minority Serving Institutions.

  • Pharmacognosy is defined as “the branch of knowledge concerned with medicinal drugs obtained from plants or other natural sources”.

  • The American Society of Pharmacognosy, founded in 1959,  is the premier natural product research scientific organization in the United States.

  • Black, Indigenous and Latinx people (BIL) have made defining contributions to the study of natural products and their use as medicinal agents.

  • There are currently ~101 HBCUs in the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, ~270 “Hispanic-Serving Institutions of Higher Learning” as defined by the Department of Education, and  ~35 “Tribal Colleges and Universities” primarily serving Native American Communities. A total of >700 institutions across the United States are defined as Minority Serving Institutions.

  • The initiative will provide the tangible benefits of ASP membership to BIL scientists. It will provide them with benefits including access to awards, research starter grants, travel grants, reduced costs to attend annual meetings and a welcoming and diverse opportunity for networking for those interested in natural products research.

  • The American Society of Pharmacognosy welcomes all interested individuals to use the link below and join us in our work to improve human health and knowledge through a broader understanding of nature.
